MOBILE MAPPER 100
Ashtech introduces the MobileMapper 100, Handheld GNSS Accuracy for GIS

A Breakthrough in Handheld Accuracy

Ashtech is unveiling today the ultimate GIS handheld for high-precision mobile mapping and data collection: the MobileMapper® 100. MobileMapper 100 is the newest generation of Ashtech GNSS handheld mapping solutions; it complements the well-known MobileMapper family that includes the MobileMapper 6 and MobileMapper CX GPS/GIS data collectors.

Like its predecessors, the MobileMapper 100 sets a new standard for mobile mapping accuracy. It provides real-time sub-meter, to centimeter accuracies in a rugged and very lightweight 22-ounce (0.62 kg) unit.

The MobileMapper 100 integrates an open operating system, built-in communications and Ashtech’s powerful BLADE™ technology. BLADE allows the MobileMapper 100 to deliver the high accuracies desired by GIS professionals, even in extreme GNSS environments, including urban and rural canyons and under dense canopies.

The MobileMapper 100 provides users maximum flexibility. It offers extended connectivity, including built-in GSM, Bluetooth, USB and RS232 communications and multimedia features like Internet access, E-compass, G-Sensor, and a 3M-pixel camera. The MobileMapper 100’s GNSS scalability – GPS or GPS/Glonass configuration – and its compatibility with 3rd party networks (VRS, FKP, MAC) enables GIS users to experience optimal data collection virtually every time and anywhere.

Combined with either Ashtech’s MobileMapper Field software or any of the many third-party offerings from Ashtech business partners, the MobileMapper 100 offers the openness, flexibility and scalability needed to answer any mobile GIS application requirement. MobileMapper 100 is Windows® Mobile® standard for full 3rd party software compatibility and supports ancillary sensors interfacing. MobileMapper 100 supports the new Digiterra Explorer V6 software.

Sibelco’s products form a starting point for windows in the home to coffee cups. As an essential component of modern life, Sibelco UK sees it as their responsibility to ensure that these natural resources are used wisely.

The Land Survey team at Sibelco prefer to use the Magellan technology provided by Ormston Technology simply because the Company offers high-quality, technologically advanced systems that are extremely cost effective. Customers of Ormston Technology profess that we have exceeded their service expectations and we are delighted to be able to report that.

Patrick Andrew, Land Surveyor, Sibelco UK says:

“I have really enjoyed working with the ProMark500TM equipment. It is robust, easy to use and with the OS Net correction, very accurate. It performs well at all of our quarrying sites from Scotland to Surrey and some of our pits are deep with steep faces and batters. It is very reassuring to be able to go to a site and not worry about the location and security of the base station and, because there is no need for a base station it means that the cost of the equipment is substantially reduced in comparison to other GPS manufacturers. The service provided by Ormston Technology is very good and we receive updates to the various programmes and interfaces on a regular basis”.

ARBORISTS FIND ORMSTON TECHNOLOGY'S GPS DEVICE TO BE 100% ACCURATE AND RELIABLE

Ormston Technology is working with arborists - KPS Contractors who undertake tree surveying and consultancy.

By using the Promark500TM which offers the winning combination of GPS+GLONASS and 20 years of file-proven Magellan technology, this powerful survey solution delivers state-of-the-art features in a light, cable free rover that gives you maximum mobility in the field.

Decay in wood is a natural recycling process, however it is a constant problem to the Arborist who has to determine the extent of decay, as in most cases decay is not visual to the human eye.  KPS Contractors have mapped many sites in the last two years which have included visual tree inspections, GPS plotting, picus tests which show the extent of decay and tree climbing inspections of thousands of trees. This work has been carried out for both private companies and individual home and land owners to help fulfil the legal duty of care placed upon anyone who owns a tree, which has the potential to injure or cause damage to another person or property.

Serge de Lussy of KPS Contractors explains:

“We needed to map 6,500 sites all over the South of England. The Promark500TM as provided by Ormston Technology has proven to be 100% accurate and reliable. We looked at a number of providers and decided to use Ormston Technology because they offer excellent customer service and support. We have had the device for a year now and if there has been a problem we can call anytime 7-days per week. We would recommend Ormston Technology to anyone who requires good support, excellent service and GPS products that are extremely cost effective.”

ORMSTON TECHNOLOGY WORK WITH THE NATIONAL TRUST

Work is underway with the National Trust to identify and locate each and every plant and vegetable in more than eighty National Trust gardens.

This immense three year survey will encapsulate details of the wide range of plants growing in National Trust gardens in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Tim Pybus, Managing Director of Ormston Technology explains:

“Our company is branching out and providing technology and support to the gardeners and volunteers who are carrying out the survey.  A photo will be taken of each plant, a GPS grid reference will be recorded using Magellan’s handheld data collector device with GPS receiver and MobileMapper CX so that each plant can then be identified by experts.

Information from all of the survey work carried out in the gardens will be entered into a central database. This will enable experts to identify which plants, trees or heritage vegetables need to be propagated in order to replenish existing collections and make plants available elsewhere.

The propagation of plants will enable the National Trust to replenish existing collections, prepare its gardens for the challenges of climate change and make plants available to other properties.

Many of the National Trust’s working kitchen gardens will be taking part in the survey. This will provide a much clearer picture of the rare and threatened heritage varieties of vegetables found in these gardens and which of them need to be preserved and propagated for wider use.”

Mike Calnan, Head of Parks and Gardens at the National Trust, explains how the latest GPS technology enables this survey to be achieved:

“This is the biggest and most comprehensive plant survey ever undertaken in the UK.  At the moment we have records for around five per cent of plants in our gardens but by implementing GPS technology this survey will take that figure to beyond 75 per cent in the next three years. Ormston Technology offered us the best product and service. With so many staff and volunteers involved and the amount of properties around the UK to be surveyed - ease of use and value for the money were fundamental to the project. The Magellan MobileMapper CX is a rugged GPS handheld device which is made to a high standard, it is weatherproof and provides sub metre accurate ordnance survey coordinate positions.”

Franklyn Tancock, who is coordinating the project at the National Trust explains how the GPS receivers are equipped with DigiTerra Explorer 5, a mobile Global Information System (GIS) and data capture software:

“DigiTerra Explorer was selected because it is an easy to understand, straightforward application. Details of captured information are easily processed providing ease of identification and display on the map.

We will be able to map out the thousands of rare species of plant in the care of the National Trust which have been bred by passionate plant collectors or gathered by plant hunters on expeditions during the last 400 years or so. We might even ‘discover’ plants that we didn’t know we had.”
